Pixel 9 Pro XL review: Longer battery life, a week of running with Tensor G4

The Pixel 9 Pro XL isn’t Google’s most premium device, nor is it the most exciting in its 2024 lineup. But after a week of use, I’m convinced that it could be the best Pixel of the Tensor era, and that’s just based on first impressions.

The most striking thing about my week with the Pixel 9 Pro XL, though, is undoubtedly the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Cell Phone battery

Every Pixel phone with a Tensor chip has had some issues with battery life, and I expected the Pixel 9 series to be no exception. But it actually performs quite well.

At this point, though, I still think Google’s hardware strikes a better balance between sharp corners and rounded edges than the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium design, and it feels much better in the hand than the cold, industrial-feeling Galaxy S24 Ultra. I hope Google can get over the polished bezel issue soon, though.

Google’s upgraded panel isn’t much better than the Pixel 8 Pro’s, but especially at higher brightness, it looks clearer and more “real” than its predecessor. For lack of a better comparison, it looks like the iPhone 15 Pro to me, with a “printed” feel, probably because the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s display panel is allegedly the same one Apple has chosen for the iPhone 16 Pro. The bump in panel brightness didn’t make a huge difference to my eyes, except that it was easier to see the screen in direct sunlight.

I suspect this may have something to do with the new vapor chamber cooling system, which seems to help dissipate heat.
