Google is hyping up its new Gemini 2.0 models. The first model, Gemini 2.0 Flash, is already live, and comes with new AI agent experiences like Project Astra and Project Mariner. Google is ending 2024 with a bang. On Wednesday, the Mountain View giant announced a slew of AI news, including the release of Gemini 2.0, a new language model with advanced multimodal capabilities. The new model kicks off what Google calls the “agency era,” where virtual AI agents will be able to perform tasks on your behalf.
Initially, Google released just one model in the Gemini 2.0 family: Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental, a super-fast, lightweight model that supports multimodal input and output. It can natively generate images mixed with text and multilingual audio, and can be seamlessly integrated into Google Search, code execution, and other tools. These features are currently in preview for developers and beta testers. Despite being smaller, 2.0 Flash outperforms Gemini 1.5 Pro in multiple areas, including factuality, reasoning, coding, math, and is also twice as fast. Regular users can try out the chat-optimized version of Gemini 2.0 Flash on the web starting today, and it will soon appear in the Gemini mobile app.
Google also showed off several impressive experiences built with Gemini 2.0. The first is an updated version of Project Astra, the experimental virtual AI agent that Google first showed off in May 2024. With Gemini 2.0, it can now hold conversations in multiple languages; use tools like Google Search, Lens, and Maps; remember the content of past conversations, and understand language with the latency of human conversation. Project Astra is designed to run on smartphones and glasses, but it is currently limited to a small group of trusted testers. People interested in trying out the prototype on an Android phone can join the waitlist here. There’s also this really cool multimodal real-time API demo, which is a bit like Project Astra, allowing you to interact with a chatbot in real time via video, voice, and screen sharing.
Next up is Project Mariner, an experimental Chrome browser extension that browses the internet and performs tasks for you. Available now to select testers in the US, the extension leverages Gemini 2.0’s multimodal capabilities to “understand and reason about information on the browser screen, including pixels and web elements like text, code, images, and forms.” Google admits the technology is still in its infancy and isn’t always reliable. But even in its current prototype form, it’s impressive, as you can see for yourself in the YouTube demo.
Google also announced Jules, an AI-powered code agent powered by Gemini 2.0. It integrates directly into your GitHub workflow, and the company says it can handle bug fixes and repetitive, time-consuming tasks “while you focus on what you actually want to build.”
For now, many of the new announcements are limited to early testers and app developers. Google says it plans to integrate Gemini 2.0 into its portfolio of products, including Search, Workspaces, Maps, and more, early next year. By then, we’ll have a better idea of how these new multimodal features and improvements translate to real-world use cases. No word yet on Gemini 2.0 Ultra and Pro models.

MSI Titan 18 HX review: the most powerful 18-inch gaming laptop
Overview: The MSI Titan 18 is the most classic high-performance work and gaming laptop available today. But that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for most potential buyers, considering the price MSI is offering, the peculiarities of the case, keyboard, monitor, and the performance and cooling of this series compared to other options. In the review, we’ll go into all these details in detail. This is my review of the 2024 MSI Titan 18 HX performance laptop.
However, it’s still somewhat gaming-oriented. The illuminated dragon logo on the lid and RGB touchpad allow you to control the RGB within the scope, or turn it off completely for business/school environments. But there’s still some blue around the exhaust pipes on the back of the laptop, pointing to the gaming DNA of this series. In comparison, something like the Blade 18, ROG Scar 18, or Alienware m18 with all the RGB lights turned off looks cleaner and is better suited to these strict use cases.
However, you’ll likely need to use both hands to move it around, as it weighs 8 lbs / 3.6 kg in our test configuration. That’s about a pound heavier than the Scar, Blade, and even the Predator Helios 18. And don’t forget, it also comes with a 400W power module, which adds 2.5kg / 1.15kg of weight to your backpack. In reality, a 400W charger isn’t that heavy, but it’s still bigger and heavier than the 330W modern chargers offered by most competitors. Overall, the weight difference between the Titan+ Charger and other 18-inch laptops is about 1 to 1.5 pounds, with the only heavier option being the Alienware m18, which weighs in at about 10 pounds for the Laptop+ Charger.
Overall, this MSI Titan 18 HX is an excellent case in terms of materials, build quality and ergonomics, however, some design choices are controversial, such as the limited RGB on the one hand and the questionable combination of black and grey areas with blue accents on the other, which may make this laptop unacceptable in very strict office or school environments.
Keyboard and touchpad – Cherry switches and RGB lighting
In everyday use, the 3840 x 2400 pixel resolution is superbly sharp. Whether you’re viewing SDR or HDR content, everything looks beautiful with colors that pop and are incredibly vibrant. Plus, it’s super bright with a matte anti-glare finish, making it suitable for a variety of use cases, including bright office spaces. Hardware and Performance
Our test model was the top-spec configuration of the 2024-generation MSI Titan 18 HX codenamed Titan 18 HX A14VIG – based on an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor, 64GB of DDR5-4000 memory and 2TB of fast SSD storage. Dual graphics cards: An Nvidia RTX 4090 16GB dGPU and UHD iGPU are integrated into the Intel processor.
Before we continue, please note that the review unit was sent by MSI running software (BIOS E1822IMS.10E, GeForce 551.76 drivers) that will be available in early April 2024. It’s been a few months since this laptop hit store shelves, so we don’t expect any subsequent software changes at this time, but a new BIOS update was released in mid-April, and others will likely be released throughout the year. We also tested the Balanced PD Power mode, which also limits the CPU to only 55W.
Finally, in the Extreme profile, CPU power consumption on battery power fluctuated between 25-55W, with some fluctuating results during this test. Details below: CPU-wise, this laptop benefits from higher PL1/PL2 power settings than any other mobile computer. However, as mentioned before, this results in a score improvement of almost 1-3% compared to the i9-13980HX in the Scar 18 or last year’s Titan GT77. This is meaningless in real-world applications.
On the GPU side, this Titan 18 outperforms other RTX 4090 laptop configurations by a few percentage points, but that’s because the default OC setting in Extreme mode is +200 MHz core/memory, which is more aggressive than the GPU’s default OC setting; other laptops are usually limited to around +100 MHz.
This is the extreme performance mode, but given the weight and cooling of this laptop, the cooling and performance of the other profiles should be particularly interesting, which we’ll discuss later. Battery life
This Titan comes with a built-in 99.9Wh MSI Titan 18 laptop battery , which is the largest MSI Titan 18 battery capacity for a laptop .
This is the MSI laptop battery life we got on our review unit with the Nvidia GPU in Optimus mode, a screen brightness of about 120 nits (brightness about 50), and a default refresh rate of 120Hz . This implementation consumes more power than the other i9-14900HX models we tested, but this is not surprising considering that the 4K display is also important. Therefore, you can expect 3-4 hours of use per day on a single charge, which is a good thing since you won’t get the battery efficiency of the MSI Titan 18 battery on the Intel HX platform.
I should also add that this Titan 18 laptop comes with a 400W power brick. It’s a fairly chunky unit, weighing over 2.5 pounds, with a fairly short cable that connects to the power brick. You can’t leave the brick on the floor; you can only connect the cable to a table, and you have to take the charger from the table. In comparison, the latest 330W chargers offered by rival laptops tend to be smaller and have longer, more ergonomic cables. This laptop supports USB-C charging with up to 100W of power through one of the left-side USB-C slots. I didn’t test the general behavior of the USB-C power supply or whether USB-C passthrough is implemented, but I expect it won’t be.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Premium Noise Cancelling Headphones
Some might even prefer the XM4 to the newer Sony XM5 for one simple reason – unlike the XM5, which lay flat, the XM4 can be folded up for easier portability. Beyond that, the much pricier XM5 comes with a better microphone, a newer design, and Bluetooth 5.2, while the XM4 only supports Bluetooth 5.0. The XM5 is also lighter, though not by much.
According to Rtings’ full review of both headphones, noise cancellation performance was about the same, but surprisingly, the XM4 did a better job blocking out “low, rumbling” sounds, such as engine noise, though the XM5 was more promising overall. The XM5 also had noticeably better audio performance, with better highs and mids, though the difference wasn’t dramatic. Rtings also found the XM4’s

life, which is another strength for this pair of headphones.
That being said, considering the price difference, the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones are an absolute steal for their current price. XM5 does outperform them in some aspects, but those who save $100 to buy XM4 will hardly have any room to complain. Sony said that WH-1000XM4 is equipped with exclusive high-fidelity noise reduction processor QN1 and dual noise sensor technology, which uses advanced algorithms to improve noise reduction performance, eliminate subtle noise in the background, and achieve pure sound quality at the listening moment; it is also equipped with new DSEE Extreme digital sound quality restoration technology, which automatically analyzes audio all the time through AI artificial intelligence learning technology, accurately and efficiently upsampling compressed sound sources to provide excellent sound quality performance.

Razer Blade 14 review: Still Razer’s most full-featured gaming laptop
Razer Blade 14: Design and Build
Sturdy and stylish are the best words to describe the 2024 Razer Blade 14 chassis, which displays the sturdiness and premium look that Razer Blade laptops are known for. Razer’s rigorous manufacturing process is also the reason for its success, and it CNC mills the laptop chassis from a single block of aluminum.
To recap some of its strengths, the QHD+ (2560x1600p) panel has ultra-thin bezels and a 16:10 aspect ratio. It also has a fast 240Hz refresh rate. That last feature was like giving my gaming a luxurious fifth gear, as I did notice noticeably less screen tearing and glitches in games I often have issues with, like Elden Ring. Razer Blade 14 BatteryPerformance
To test the Razer Laptop Battery
life, I fully charged the laptop’s 68.1-watt-hour Razer Blade 14 Laptop Battery. I cranked the volume to 50 percent and plugged in a pair of cheap headphones to reduce noise. I also switched the laptop to airplane mode and turned off the keyboard lighting. Finally, I set a 4K Hollywood movie to play on repeat and timed how long it took the laptop to go into standby mode.
Razer Blade 14: Keyboard and Trackpad
Upon booting up, the 2024 Razer Blade 14 lit up with a mesmerizing blue-lit display, which made me think of all the possibilities for personalizing each key on the Razer RGB Chroma keyboard.
The Razer Blade’s Precision Glass trackpad feels super smooth to the touch, but not too slippery. It allowed my fingers to glide quickly but stop precisely.
Razer Blade 14: Display, Audio, and Webcam
The Razer Blade 14’s display is the same as the 2023 model, which means it’s also gorgeous and incredibly smooth.
The
Razer Blade 14 Laptop Battery
lasted 595 minutes (9 hours, 55 minutes), which is a very good score for a gaming laptop. But it’s worth noting that our PCWorld battery tests aren’t particularly power-hungry. In real-life gaming scenarios, battery life is likely to be only half as long as that Razer Blade 14 laptop battery(around four and a half hours), so if you plan on gaming nonstop all day, you’ll still want to carry around an adapter for the Razer Blade 14. Razer Blade 14: Should You Buy It? Despite its price tag, the Razer Blade 14 2024 delivers commendable performance and very smooth visuals for its size. For me, that’s what makes the Razer Blade 14 such a great choice—I basically see everything I want in a laptop here. A rugged build, great performance, and stunning visuals, all wrapped up in a compact, portable device. If you can afford one and you’re tempted, you should definitely take the plunge.

Asus ROG Phone 9 hands-on review: The first gaming phone with Snapdragon 8 Elite
The newly announced chipset is the real highlight of this gaming-focused Android phone. Qualcomm’s 8-core Oryon CPU and Adreno 830 GPU actually outperform some of today’s best laptops, making it a perfect match for Asus’ latest gaming phone.I can see the inside of the new ROG Phone 9, including the Asus ROG Phone 9 Smartphone battery and motherboard, but the all-important battery mAh is blacked out. We’ll have to wait until the launch event to learn more about the Asus ROG Phone 9 specs. This means that when playing games for a long time, the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset will make the middle of the device (where you touch the least) hot, and the heat dissipation space will be equal. This is different from most phones, most of which get particularly hot on one side when playing games or Asus ROG Phone battery charging.
In fact, I was able to benchmark the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip in a reference phone provided by Qualcomm (not directly inside the Asus ROG Phone 9 just yet), and it beat my iPhone 16 Pro Max, especially in multi-core scores (more benchmark data will be released early next week).
The ROG Phone 9 showcases nine improvements Asus has made to its smartphones. This is the best experience gamers can get on a phone. Gamers will also like the dual USB-C ports, the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the dot matrix LED on the back that displays information such as time and

life. It looks similar to the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro we tested at CES nearly a year ago, and has room to surpass it if the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro (which we haven’t seen yet) is released at the same time. For gamers, Qualcomm says this will mean a 40% improvement in gaming performance and a 35% improvement in ray tracing compared to current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones. While the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and OnePlus 13 will likely be equipped with the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, Asus’s launch will take place in 2024. From the looks of it, the Asus ROG Phone 9 feels a bit lighter in the hand than the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro that was released at CES 2024 earlier this year, and the size, weight, and overall design haven’t changed much.
Shortcut aims to review every Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered smartphone, especially those coming to the US. Asus’ event will take place on November 19, and it may be the first phone to launch in North America with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. Stay tuned for more news in the coming days

Redmi K80 is officially unveiled, the new phone uses a circular camera island and the main sensor is 50MP
Recently, Xiaomi released its flagship models Xiaomi Mi 15 and Xiaomi Mi 15 Pro in China, equipped with Snapdragon 8 Elite chips. According to Xiaomi’s release schedule, the next flagship model will come from the Redmi sub-brand, specifically the Redmi K80 series. According to reports, the Redmi K80 and K80 Pro will debut in China at the end of this month. Rumors surrounding the device and pictures shared by Xiaomi executives show that the K80 series will adopt a circular camera module. New photos of phones allegedly from the K80 series have appeared on Chinese social media platforms, consistent with rumors about the new design. Redmi K80 is developing an ultra-large capacity product Redmi K80 battery, in which the tested battery capacities reached 5960mAh and 6060mAh respectively, and the maximum capacity under laboratory conditions can even reach 6500mAh. It is reported that this will make the Redmi K80 series one of the highest-capacity mobile phones currently on the market, Redmi K80’s battery
configuration has been significantly improved compared to theK70’s 5000mAh batteryand the Redmi K70 Extreme Edition’s 5500mAh battery
. In addition, the Redmi K80 series is expected to be equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen4 processor and 2K resolution OLED flexible straight screen, and is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of this year. Recent leaks show that the rear camera of the Redmi K80 Pro will be equipped with a 50-megapixel OmniVision Light Fusion 900 main camera, a 32-megapixel Samsung S5KKD1 ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera (supporting 2.6x optical zoom). This AI model can turn your next Google search into a conversation
Google Search may soon become more conversational on Android devices thanks to artificial intelligence, according to unreleased code discovered by 9to5 Google. The search app may soon add an AI mode that combines interactive discussions and other features to make Google’s base service more like the Gemini AIassistant.
AImode (referred to as AIM in the unreleased code) blends the human-like interactions of Gemini Live with Google Search and joins the visual understanding and analysis provided by Google Lens. In AIM, you can respond to the results of a Google Search. Not only can you view a list of results, but you can also ask follow-up questions, interrupt replies, and otherwise treat Search like Gemini Live.
If it rolls out, AI mode should appear as a tab in the bottom navigation bar of the Google app. In addition to using voice search, you can also use photos taken with your phone or other uploaded photos. You can then explain what you want to search for in the image. Another interesting point in the code is that its placeholder is a winking emoji. Gemini or search?AI mode in Google Search makes sense at first glance, but when viewed in context, it raises some questions. It looks very similar to Gemini, more like a variation of Gemini Live. This fits in with Google’s seeming enthusiasm for people to use Gemini for everything. AI Mode isn’t exactly the same as Gemini Live, as AI Mode will offer a multimodal experience combining text, voice, and images, but it’s close enough that it’s hard to know when you should use one over the otherAI Mode may just be a path to a more comprehensive service. Enhancing Google Search with Lens’ ability to ask questions of photos and videos, and enhancing the current voice interaction (transcribe verbal requests), could pave the way for Google Search to become an aspect of Gemini, and vice versa. It could also change the way we think about the world’s most popular search engine.
Instead of asking Google to say “show me the results,” we could just ask it to “give me a direct, thoughtful answer.”

As the most dazzling star in the field of artificial intelligence, Sam Ultraman certainly hopes that someone can find a way not to destroy humanity.
Sam Altman, known as the PT Barnum of artificial intelligence, has a message for those who care about the technology he’s spent his life promoting: Don’t worry, the tech geeks are working on it.
Let’s back up a bit.
Altman, the 39-year-old venture capitalist and CEO of OpenAI, spoke with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at the New York Times Dealbook Summit on Wednesday. As gentle but affable as ever, Altman almost made you forget he’s a billionaire doomsayer who has also repeatedly warned about the risks of artificial intelligence. At one point, Sorkin asked, “Do you believe that governments or anyone else can figure out how to avoid” the existential threat posed by superintelligent AI systems?
Cue the shy boy’s deflection.
“I’m sure the researchers will figure out how to avoid that,” Altman replied. “I think the smartest people in the world will work on a range of technical problems. You know, I’m a little overly optimistic by nature, but I think they’ll figure it out.”
He went on to suggest that perhaps the AI itself is so smart that it will figure out how to control itself, but didn’t elaborate.
“We have this magic—” Altman says, but then corrects himself, “Not magic. We have this incredible science called deep learning that can help us solve these very hard problems.”
Ah, yes. ExxonMobil will solve the climate crisis…
Look, it’s hard not to be drawn to Altman, who did not respond to requests for comment. He keeps his cool, knowing that even if his technology disrupts the global economy, he’ll be safe in his bunker off the coast of California. (“I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, IDF gas masks, and a big piece of land in Big Sur that I can fly to,” he said.) But for the rest of us, it would be nice to hear Altman or any of his fellow AI boosters explain what they mean when they say “we’ll figure it out.”
Even AI researchers admit they still don’t understand exactly how the technology works. A report commissioned by the U.S. State Department called AI systems essentially black boxes that pose an “extinction-level threat” to humanity.
Even if researchers can sort out the technical issues and solve what they call the “coordination problem” — making sure AI models don’t become monster robots that destroy the world — Altman acknowledged that there will still be problems that some people or some governments will have to solve.
At the Dealbook Summit, Altman again put the onus on regulating the technology on some imaginary international organization made up of rational adults who don’t want to kill each other. He told Sorkin, even if “even if we can make this [superintelligence model] technically safe, which I think we will find a way to do, we have to have faith in our governments…there has to be global coordination…I think we’ll rise to the challenge, but it seems challenging.”
There are a lot of assumptions in this, and it reflects a myopic understanding of how policymaking and global coordination actually work: which is to say, slowly, inefficiently, and often not at all.
This kind of naivety must be instilled in the 1% elite in Silicon Valley, who are keen to stuff AI into every device we use, despite the technology’s flaws. That’s not to say it’s not useful! AI is being used to do all sorts of cool things, like helping people with disabilities or the elderly, as my colleague Clare Duffy has reported. Some AI models are doing some exciting things with biochemistry (which is frankly beyond my comprehension, but I trust the honest scientists who won the Nobel Prize for this technology earlier this year).
