Pixel 9 Pro XL review: Longer battery life, a week of running with Tensor G4

The Pixel 9 Pro XL isn’t Google’s most premium device, nor is it the most exciting in its 2024 lineup. But after a week of use, I’m convinced that it could be the best Pixel of the Tensor era, and that’s just based on first impressions.

The most striking thing about my week with the Pixel 9 Pro XL, though, is undoubtedly the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Cell Phone battery

life.

Every Pixel phone with a Tensor chip has had some issues with battery life, and I expected the Pixel 9 series to be no exception. But it actually performs quite well.

At this point, though, I still think Google’s hardware strikes a better balance between sharp corners and rounded edges than the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium design, and it feels much better in the hand than the cold, industrial-feeling Galaxy S24 Ultra. I hope Google can get over the polished bezel issue soon, though.

Google’s upgraded panel isn’t much better than the Pixel 8 Pro’s, but especially at higher brightness, it looks clearer and more “real” than its predecessor. For lack of a better comparison, it looks like the iPhone 15 Pro to me, with a “printed” feel, probably because the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s display panel is allegedly the same one Apple has chosen for the iPhone 16 Pro. The bump in panel brightness didn’t make a huge difference to my eyes, except that it was easier to see the screen in direct sunlight.

I easily got over 5 hours of screen-on time on my Pixel 9 Pro XL during 13-15 hours of use, and that was before the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Cell Phone battery

power saving mode kicked in. That’s simply outstanding battery life compared to the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold I used before.

Dare I say it, I think this may be the best Pixel ever, and not just the Tensor-powered model. I was impressed with the Tensor G4 overall, and not just in terms ofTensor G4 batterylife.

Despite the small upgrades on paper, the Tensor G4 feels like it has more “breathing room”. Software runs noticeably faster (perhaps due to the added memory space or chip optimizations), and it also runs cooler. To be clear, it still runs hot, but not as hot and cold as the Tensor G3. Especially with heavy use, the phone will gradually heat up over a few minutes, then peak and stay stable. There may be some throttling, as some people have claimed to find, but it never bothered me during normal use and even gaming. I suspect this may have something to do with the new vapor chamber cooling system, which seems to help dissipate heat.

Pixel 4a battery update will reportedly reduce available power by over 40%, with more changes to come

Last month, Google released an unexpected Pixel 4a update that was linked to undisclosed Google Pixel 4a Smartphone battery  issues, and it turns out that the update apparently reduced available power by more than 40%, while also removing some features.

In early January, Google released a new update for the Pixel 4a, which the company explained would “improve the stability of battery performance,” but also warned that the update “may” cause the battery to “last less time between charges.” To compensate for the inconvenience. Since the update was released, Pixel 4a users have seen a drastic reduction inGoogle Pixel 4a Smartphone battery life.

Some users say that their Pixel 4a, which previously could last a full day, now only lasts less than 8 hours. Other users have had it worse, with many sharing their experiences with the device after the update was released in the r/Pixel4a subreddit.

Google still hasn’t detailed why these changes were made, but it’s apparently significant, as the company has also removed all Pixel 4a software versions released before the battery update.

Android Authority has launched an investigation into the impact of this update, which lowers the maximum charging voltage of the

Google Pixel 4a phone battery, according to findings from Asahi Linux developer Hector Martin. The change drops the maximum voltage from 4.45V to 3.95V. AA claims that while it’s only a 0.5V drop, this reduces the Google Pixel 4a Smartphone battery  usable charge by 44%. This is because the lower end of the voltage range is 3.3V.

Other changes in this update include the removal of adaptive charging, a feature on Pixel devices that was designed to slow down battery charging and thus extend battery life. As Google hinted (quoted below), the estimated charging time has also been removed. The update also removes the option to show battery percentage in the status bar, but users who had that setting turned on didn’t notice any changes. Logitech TK820 Wireless All-in-One Keyboard, Windows 8

Logitech released a new wireless all-in-one keyboard, the TK820, which immediately caught my eye.
To fully test the TK820, I connected it to my desktop PC and home theater PC (HTPC).
My daily desktop keyboard is the Logitech K800, which I really like. Given that I was very happy with the Logitech TK820 Keyboard Batterylife of the Logitech TK820 keyboard, I was a little disappointed that the TK820 didn’t come with the same rechargeable batteries. However, I think this is only a minor drawback, especially since the TK820 really lives up to Logitech’s claims, and a set of batteries can last up to 6 months.


Since I had previously connected a Logitech Unifying receiver to use with my daily keyboard, setting up the TK820 on my desktop PC was very easy. To connect the TK820 to the desktop PC, I simply connected it to the receiver.
The setup process on the HTPC was slightly more involved, as I needed to plug in the Unifying receiver and download Logitech’s SetPoint software. In both cases, I was up and running in just a few minutes. The TK820’s keyboard is slightly smaller than my everyday desktop keyboard, but it’s very comfortable to type on. The TK820 is equipped with Logitech’s rounded-edge Incurve keys and the Logitech PerfectStroke key system. The Logitech PerfectStroke key system is designed to give you the best combination of a laptop and a standalone keyboard.
