Whether you have an iPhone 13, iPad Mini or a new M1 MacBook Pro, AirDrop is the most convenient way to transfer files and content from one Apple device to another. AirDrop allows you to quickly share photos, documents, videos, recordings, contact cards, network links, and notes between Apple devices.

AirDrop is limited to iOS and MacOS. When AirDrop came out in 2012, it was one of the features that separated the iPhone from the Android phone. You don’t even need the latest iPhone 13 Pro or a 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with an M1 Max chip to use AirDrop. It works on any iOS device running iOS 7 or higher and any Mac running OS X Yosemite or higher. The only “requirement” is that the distance between the two devices is within 30 feet, and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on.

How to enable airdrop

On iPhone, make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both turned on. Next, open the control center panel, and then press and hold the wireless connection icon until it expands into a rectangle. Click “Airdrop” and select “Close receiving”, “Contacts only” or “Everyone” to control who can send files to your phone.

On your Mac, check if you have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. Open a Finder window. Then, click AirDrop from the sidebar. A window with a radar-like graphic will open. Anyone nearby who has AirDrop enabled will appear in this window. At the bottom of the window, you can choose who can send you content.

How to airdrop on iPhone

To use AirDrop on iPhone, the person you want to send files to needs to have an Apple device with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If any of you has enabled personal hotspot, please turn it off; otherwise AirDrop will not work. The same is true if you use a VPN.

Whenever you see the “Share” button on your phone, you can choose “Airdrop”. When you do this, you will see a list of all nearby Apple devices that also have AirDrop enabled. Tap the name of the device you want to send to. Find the person you want to send a photo to, and click their contact icon. Next, a reminder window pops up on the recipient’s phone, which contains a preview of the content you shared. They can choose to accept or reject. Once they click Accept, the photo you selected will be transferred. The pictures and videos will be saved to the photo application on the recipient’s phone.

If the person you want to send to has their AirDrop set as contacts only, then they need to have a contact card in the contacts app that contains your email address or phone number to make it work. If you are not in their address book, ask them to change their AirDrop preference to “Everyone” to receive your files.

How to airdrop on Mac

First, make sure that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your Mac are turned on, and then open a Finder window. Next, click AirDrop from the sidebar. To share a file, simply drag and drop it onto the contact icon of the desired person in the AirDrop window. Also, just like on iOS, you can access AirDrop at any time when you see the “Share” button.

If you have trouble sending files via AirDrop on your Mac, click the “I can’t see the person you’re looking for” button at the bottom of the “AirDrop Finder” window. Then, click the Search Old Mac button that pops up.

How to airdrop from iPhone to Mac

If you want to airdrop content from iPhone to Mac, start with the content. For example, if you want a web link to AirDrop, please open that page on your iPhone. Then open the share menu and click on the AirDrop icon. Next, select the Mac icon and name of the device you want to send the web link to. The recipient’s Mac will display a prompt asking them to accept or decline. Once they click accept, the web link will be transmitted and opened in their default web browser.

If you want to airdrop from iPhone to Mac, and both are signed in to the same Apple ID, you will not see an option to accept or decline. The transfer will only happen.

How to change your AirDrop name

Your AirDrop name is the same as your generic device name. To check or change it on iPhone, open Settings. Tap “General” and then tap “About”. The first item in the list shows the current name of your iPhone. Just tap to change.
