TP-Link, headquartered in Shenzhen, is the world’s largest manufacturer of consumer WiFi network products, with annual sales of 150 million devices and a 42% share of the global consumer WLAN market. The company’s routers also often receive the “Amazon’s Choice” badge in Amazon’s “WiFi Router” category.

TP-Link AC1200 Archer C50 (v6) is the best-selling “Amazon’s Choice” Wi-Fi router in the UK. It is mainly sold in the European market, but there is also another version in the US Amazon online store.

CyberNews found many flaws in its default firmware and web interface during its investigation of this router. For this reason, the news media recommends all TP-Link AC1200 Archer C50 (v6) owners to upgrade their devices to the latest firmware as soon as possible.

According to CyberNews, TP-Link AC1200 Archer C50 (v6) comes with outdated firmware and is vulnerable to dozens of known security vulnerabilities. WPS is also enabled by default on the device, which may allow an attacker to brute force the router, while its administrator credentials and configuration backup files are encrypted using weak protocols that are easily broken.

At the same time, the default version of the router’s web interface application has many bad security practices and vulnerabilities, including click hijacking, character set mismatch, cookie slack, private IP disclosure, weak HTTPS encryption, etc.

Thankfully, most of these vulnerabilities have now been patched, but CyberNews points out that some vulnerabilities are only half patched. For example, the backend of the router still seems to be protected, and an attacker may find the entry point in the web interface and re-use previously known flaws.

CyberNews contacted TP-Link to inform the company of its findings and stated that it would force firmware updates to affected devices, and the owners would receive “relevant notices” about these updates through its management interface.

The lesson here is that although you may have purchased a brand new device from Amazon or any other online or offline retailer, you still need to take the time to ensure that your router is updated to the latest firmware to protect your network and your data.
