iPhone Battery Replacement: What you need to know
Most of us know that smartphonebatteries degrade as we recharge them, and there’s no exception when it comesto iPhones. Fortunately, a weak battery doesn’t mean you need an all new iPhone
– you can just replace the battery instead. If this is a path you want to go
take, here’s what you need to know.

Why replace an iPhone battery?

All smartphone batteries get weaker over time, but last year it
was revealed that versions of iOS from 10.2.1 onward reduce the peak
performance of older iPhone models with degraded batteries to prevent
unexpected shutdowns. Apple says these shutdowns would be caused by older
iPhones drawing more power than the battery can provide in a single instance.
The decrease in peak performance should initially only be noticeable when using
particularly demanding apps.
iPhones use lithium-ion batteries (as with all smartphones),
which degrade over time due to the battery’s chemical composition. Apple says
the iPhone battery is designed to retain 80% of its original capacity over 500
complete recharges.
Replacing an old iPhone battery with a new one will restore
performance to “normal”. In addition, a fresh battery will mean your
iPhone will last longer before going flat. 
If you want to check the health of your battery (available on
iOS 11.3 or newer), you can do so by following these steps: 
This will show the maximum capacity of your battery. If your
iPhone performance is being throttled due to a reduced battery, you’ll be able
to disable this here. Disabling performance throttling can however lead to
unexpected shutdowns or app crashes. 

How much will an iPhone battery replacement cost me?

If your iPhone is still under warranty, covered by consumerlaw, or you AppleCare+, Apple will replace your battery for
free if of charge. 
If you’re not covered by any of the aforementioned, what you’ll
pay will depend on which iPhone have you have. An out of warranty battery
replacement for the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR will set
you back $105.
Out of battery replacement for all other eligible models –
including the iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus,
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus – is $75. 
Apple will add on a $19.95 shipping fee if you’re sending in
your iPhone by post. 

Where can I get my iPhone battery replaced?

You get your iPhone battery replaced either in-store or bymailing your device to Apple. If you go for the in-store option, you can either
make an appointment at an Apple Store, or take it to an authorised third-party
Apple retailer.
If you don’t have a store nearby, Apple will send you a box that
you can use to ship your iPhone to an Apple Repair Centre. Apple estimates that
you’ll typically get your iPhone back in about a week.

What iPhones are eligible for a battery replacement?

Apple should be able to replace the battery of any iPhone.However, at a minimum, the company will definitely replace batteries on devices
as old as the 2014 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. 
Apple will typically only replace your battery if it retains
less than 80% of its original capacity.

Who should replace their iPhone battery?

If your iPhone is around two years old and you’d prefer to holdonto it rather than buying a new one, replacing the battery is a pretty goodidea. Even if you haven’t noticed any performance impacts, a fresh battery will
extend the life of your iPhone and give you a bit more juice to get through the
day. 

This is what your next iPhone design could look like

It’snever too soon to speculate on what the next iPhone will look like or whatfeatures it may have. And such speculation is already well underway, never mind
that Apple typically unveils its latest handsets in September, and there’s
little reason to suspect that the timetable will change with the 2019 models.
TheCashKaro.com site out of India has published “iPhone X1” or iPhone 11 CAD-
renders of what it claims is an exclusive look at Apple’s next flagships,
through a partnership with “trusted leaker” OnLeaks.
Applesaid it does not comment on rumors and speculation.
The
images of the phone show off a triangular shaped triple-lens camera
array, including perhaps a 3D sensor. That would let a shooter switch among
telephotos, wide-angles and even wider wide angles.
The
lenses would sit under a noticeable camera bump on top of the
rear glass back of the phone, at least on the 11 Max model (or whatever it
might be called).

Noted
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuoof TF International Securities predicted earlier in the
year that there would be three new models, with such a trio likely to have the
same or similar screen sizes as the current latest iPhones crop: the iPhone XR
(6.1 inches), XS (5.8 inches) and XS Max (6.5 inches). The displays are
expected to be bordered by narrow bezels and once again sport a notch
on the top of the screen.
The
phones may also carry bigger batteries. And, in this iteration, it
seems Apple is still not ready to ditch its proprietary Lightning port,
choosing it for now over what is fast becoming the standard on other
smartphones, the USB-C connector.
No word
on when there might be a 5G iPhone, but even with the recent peace agreement in
court between Apple and chip supplier Qualcomm, 5G for
Apple’s flagship seems more likely to be a 2020 development.
It may
also be 2020 or well after before Apple might try its own foldable phone on the
public, as Samsung has with its now-delayed, near $2,000 Galaxy Fold device. A recent patent filing suggests Apple
could be working on a foldable of its own, maybe a device that could be a combo
iPhone/iPad of sorts.
Sooner
than that, Apple could borrow a feature Samsung brought with its latest Galaxy
flagships, the ability to charge another device by placing it on top of
the iPhone.
We’llcertainly learn more about the next version of the iOS software at the core ofiPhones in June, when Apple hosts its annual Worldwide Developer Conference orWWDC.
On the
hardware side, meanwhile, between now and September, you can bank on
more Apple leaks to come.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update hits worrying stumbling block with USB drives

Testers can’t upgrade if they have external USB devices orSD cards connected

Those trying to upgrade to the latest update for Windows 10 are finding their PC is being
blocked from making the move if they have an external USB device or an SD card
plugged into their machine.
Why? It seems that the May 2019 Update – which is still
in the final stages of testing, ahead of an expected release in May, naturally enough
(probably later in the month) – is suffering from a problem whereby all drives
can be inappropriately reassigned different letters if USB devices or SD cards
are connected to the PC.
As you’re probably aware, Windows gives
every drive attached to a computer a letter, whether that’s an internal hard
drive or SSD, optical drives, or indeed external drives such as USB sticks.

And when upgrading to the May 2019 Update, it’s possible that these drive
letters can be changed, with potentially nasty side-effects.
Microsoft explains: “Example:
An upgrade to the May 2019 Update is tried on a computer that has the October
2018 Update installed and also has a thumb drive inserted into a USB port.
“Before
the upgrade, the device would have been mounted in the system as drive G based
on the existing drive configuration. However, after the upgrade, the device is
reassigned a different drive letter. For example, the drive is reassigned as
drive H.”

Internal hemorrhaging

Thereal sticking point is that this reassignment of drive letters isn’t limited toremovable hardware such as USB devices, but internal hard drives can also beaffected. In that case, you can imagine the potential damage when the PC is
looking for files on a certain drive which are no longer there because it has
been reassigned a different letter – or indeed if your system drive succumbs to
this fate, heaven forbid.
So
you can understand why Microsoft has blocked upgrades in the case of computers
with such USB devices attached. Those who wish to upgrade their preview version
of Windows 10 can currently get around the block simply by unplugging any
external USB devices or SD cards, and restarting their machine, whereupon the
May 2019 Update should become available.
Presumably,
the issue whereby internal drives are reassigned a different drive letter can’t
occur if there are no external devices plugged in.
Of course, this problem
should most definitely be solved (we would hope) by the time the May 2019
Update is released to the general computing public. The last thing Microsoft
needs is another disastrous issue like the filedeletion problemwhich hit the infamously bug-plagued October2018 Update, particularly as Microsoft has vowed to get things right this time around.
Microsoft
observed: “This issue will be resolved in a future servicing update for Windows
10. For Windows Insiders [preview build testers], this issue is resolved in
build 18877 [which is still to be released] and later builds.”

This could be our first look all the
way round the iPhone 11,
thanks to a video render from a reliable leaker hitting the web.
CashKaro has teamed up with prolific Twitter leak OnLeaks to
produce the CAD renders which, if accurate, appear to confirm a large triple
camera block on the rear of the new iPhone.
This new
render follows on from a series of leaks over the past few months which all
point to the triple-camera setup on the iPhone 11 – so it doesn’t really tell
us anything we haven’t heard or seen before, rather it adds further fuel to
existing rumors.

Remind yourself what the iPhone XS looks
like
From the front the new iPhone 11
looks pretty much identical to the iPhone XSand iPhone X,
with OnLeaks claiming in aseparate Tweet that it will have “virtually same notch and
bezels as current iPhone XS.”
Apparently Apple will
reduce the size of the bezels around the screen very slightly, the screen will
stay at 5.8 inches and the new iPhone will measure 143.9 x 71.4 x 7.8mm,
although it’ll apparently be 9mm thick at the camera bump.
One
design tweak which we noticed on the side of the handset is the mute slider
appears to be a smaller, horizontally sliding switch in these renders similar
to the one found on iPads, rather than the wider, front-to-back switch which
we’ve seen on all iPhones to date.
However
that’s a minor point compared to what is happening round the back.

Elegant or
ugly?

If
the new iPhone 11 does turn out to look like this, the camera design doesn’t
appear to follow the elegant, minimalist styling that Apple is known for –
although we’ll have to wait until launch before we can properly gauge consumer
reaction.
The
fact that an additional camera on the rear will provide added functionality to
the camera – if could be an ultra-wide lens or a telephoto lens allowing for
optical zoom – may outweigh any negative feelings on how it looks.
It’s
worth taking this latest information with a pinch of salt as it is, after all,
just a leak and we’ve not had anything official from Apple on its next iPhone
series. For that, we’ll have to wait for September.
