In fact, this is OnePlus’ most powerful smartphone yet. As the first OnePlus phone to feature Qualcomm’s latest (and fastest) Snapdragon 845 processor (the same chipset also used in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Sony Xperia XZ2), the OnePlus 6 reprises a familiar role. It’s another mid-range phone with flagship DNA at its core. This time, though, there are some changes.

Well, the first thing you’ll notice, especially when you hold the two phones next to each other, is that the 6’s screen has grown from 6 inches to 6.3 inches, which necessitates a slight increase in the size of the phone. That might not sound like a big difference, but when you factor in the increased thickness and weight of the phone, you’ll find that this smartphone isn’t as pocketable as last year’s model. The 6 also joins the ranks of all-metal and glass smartphones, with the front and back of the phone sandwiched between a layer of Gorilla Glass 5. This provides additional drop protection, but the OnePlus 6 isn’t IP-rated for dust or water resistance. Instead, OnePlus says the phone is “waterproof for everyday use,” so you can expect it to be protected from light rain splashes, but that’s about it.
Elsewhere, the layout of the OnePlus 6 remains largely unchanged. There’s a volume rocker and dual SIM card slots on the left side of the phone, and a three-position “alert slider” and power button on the right. The bottom houses the USB-C port with Dash Charge support, a 3.5mm headphone jack (yay!), and a lone speaker grille. OnePlus 6 review: displayAs for the display, we’re looking at a large 6.3-inch 2,280 x 1,080 resolution AMOLED screen with a 19:9 aspect ratio. As you’d expect, it takes up most of the front of the phone, and there’s even an iPhone X-like notch at the top, though it’s not as wide as Apple’s equivalent. The OnePlus 6 is powered by the same processor as the Sony Xperia XZ2 – Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845, and it’s just as fast, hitting 2,422 points in the Geekbench 4 single-core test and 8,783 points in the multi-core test. There’s no doubt that this phone is more than capable of topping its category. The OnePlus 6 also has the same 3,300mAhOnePlus 5T batteryas last year’s OnePlus 5T. While I don’t think overall battery life suffers much, even with the increased screen size, the 6 is clearly not as long-lasting as last year’s. In our video rundown test, the phone lasted 17 hours and 18 minutes – a full two hours less than the OnePlus 5T – but you can still expect the OnePlus 6 to last at least a day and a half on a single charge. You might not believe me when I say the main specs – the two dual cameras look almost identical – but the main camera’s f.1.7, 16-megapixel sensor is 19% larger than last year’s phone. This means the sensor is able to capture more light, resulting in better low-light photos – especially with optical image stabilization (OIS) enabled.
Still image quality is noticeably better this year, and it’s clear that the OnePlus 6 is more capable of taking images in a variety of environments. The camera captures more fine detail than before, especially when the light gets dim, and there’s little visual noise regardless of lighting conditions. Simply put, the OnePlus 6’s camera is one of the best in the business. OnePlus 6 review: VerdictThe OnePlus 6 is a significant improvement over last year’s OnePlus 5T. While some of these improvements aren’t immediately noticeable, the decision to add a Snapdragon 845 processor to a phone that costs £300 less than its competition is a smart move.
Add in some camera upgrades, a refreshing design, and Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, and the OnePlus 6 starts to take on a familiar appeal. It’s a smartphone that’s every bit as capable as its competitors, and the price isn’t too outrageous. That’s always going to work in the OnePlus 6’s favor, isn’t it?
