The Encore 2 is one of the first “cheap” Windows 8 tablets, and we’ll undoubtedly see more of them. In fact, there were several launches at this year’s IFA show, including the $119 Encore 2 Mini with a 7-inch screen.
Small size, affordable price, rugged industrial design
Toshiba Encore 2 tablet battery lifeEncore 2 specsInside the Encore 2 is a 1.4 GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor, 1 GB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a Micro USB 2.0 port for charging and connecting external devices. There’s 32 GB of onboard storage, with a 64 GB version available. For a device in this price range, you should generally expect 16 GB or less. And it’s easy to expand the storage by adding a microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card (up to 128 GB).
Toshiba also offers a free one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal (originally $69.99/year), which includes 1TB of One Drive storage. You can install Office 365 Personal on the tablet, PC, or Mac.
Sure, the screen resolution isn’t HD — it’s actually just 720p, but I guess that’s good enough. The front and rear cameras are adequate, but nothing special. The front camera is 1.2 megapixels, and the rear camera is 5 megapixels, which is pretty good for a tablet in this price range.Toshiba Encore 2 tablet battery life is expected to be 10 hours, but in my daily use (browsing the web, checking email, playing games, and watching YouTube videos),Toshiba Encore 2 tablet battery life was closer to 8 hours. If you really want to maximize battery life, turn the screen brightness to its factory-set maximum. The tablet uses Dolby Digital Plus technology, and two small speakers are located on the back of the tablet. This makes them easy to cover with your fingers, which I find a bit annoying, though generally speaking, headphones are usually a better choice when listening to music on a tablet. Another reason that might put some people off is that it doesn’t have an HDMI-out port for connecting to a larger screen.
The speakers point toward the back of the tablet. Modern appsThe Encore 2 is designed primarily for use with the Modern UI and apps, but you can use the desktop if you really want to. Since it’s running Windows 8.1, you can put two Modern apps side by side and use them simultaneously. However, the Modern UI can become sluggish if you run too many apps at once. I suspect the Atom processor can’t handle that much multitasking.
You can download apps from the Windows Store, and since I find the best use for this tablet is media consumption, I installed video and music apps on it, as well as a few games.
