How to transfer important files and applications from the old MacBook to the new MacBook?

Using Apple’s built-in migration assistant feature, you can transfer data from your old MacBook or Time Machine backup to your new MacBook.

Back up your data and update to the latest MacOS

Use Time Machine to back up your Mac in case there are problems during the migration process. You can also take a quick look at your old Mac and delete anything you don’t want to take with you. After backing up the old Mac, the next step is to make sure that both Macs are up to date and running the latest version of MacOS. Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner, click About This Mac, and then click the Software Update button to check for updates.

Next, in order to use Migration Assistant, your old Mac needs a name. To check if it has a name, go to “System Preferences”> “Sharing” and check the “Computer Name” field at the top. Finally, connect the two computers to the power source.

Use Migration Assistant to transfer data

As long as you are running a newer MacOS, such as Big Sur or Monterey, you can connect to your Mac wirelessly. Just make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on for each computer and they are close to each other and connected to the same network.

After aligning the two Macs, open the migration assistant on the new Mac. Just search for it or find it in the utilities folder of your application folder. When the Migration Assistant opens, click Continue and enter your password. Once you do this, every program on your computer will be closed. Next, choose to backup from Mac, Time Machine, or start disk transfer, and click Continue.

On the old Mac, open the Migration Assistant, click “Continue”, select “Transfer to another Mac”, and click “Continue.”

Now, return to your new Mac and you will be asked if you want to migrate from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk. Select From another Mac, click Continue and make sure the security code is arranged on your Mac. The name of the old Mac will appear in the Migration Assistant window for the old Mac-select it and click Continue.

You will now see a list of items to be transferred: applications, user accounts, other files and folders, and computer and network settings. Check the items you want to take with you to your new Mac. If your new user account has the same name as the user account on the old Mac, you will be asked to rename or keep the name and replace the user account you set up on the new Mac with it.

Click Continue to start the migration. Depending on the amount of information you transfer, this process may take up to several hours. After the transfer process is over, close the migration assistant on both computers, and then jump to the new computer to view the transferred files.
